I wish I were more self reliant. Why didn't I heed the words of my SOILS 4000 professor when he said to make sure when buying a lot for your home that you know the quality of your soil so you are able to grow grass, trees and a garden. I was more enticed by the view and didn't really consider that I would be the type of person that would want to grow a garden and never considered that a septic tank would have a terrible time trying to drain through clay soil that is basically like cement. Lessons learned. But I still love my home and where we live.
Between the ground squirrels and extremely poor soil quality my growing capacity has been very limited in Bridgerland. Cody built a big garden box a few years back, we grew seeds, then transplanted them in June only to be snowed on. Then replanted for the squirrels to have a feast. So I turned it into a raspberry patch which actually has done very well and gave us many berries this year. However, not enough to make jam yet, but enough to pick a bowl full here and there to have on ice cream and cereal. YUM! Eventually i hope to make another box on the other side of our house and grow some more so that we could harvest them, since the squirrels don't seem to touch them. LUCKILY, the Calder's grow wonderful berries and shared some with us in trade for Cody's time training Kayden in the weight room this summer. The kids and I had a great time making Raspberry Jam together and it tastes wonderful! Sadly it is not going to last long.
We planted on our deck some tomato plants, that the Moose (Gene Merrick) gave us and some pumpkins. Sadly with such a cold and wet June plus too small of containers our pumpkins never really had a chance to get big enough. The tomatoes are the sweetest best tasting ones that I have ever had and Ridge loves them too! So on an extremely small scale we have really enjoyed the things we've attempted to grow and hope to be able to improve our efforts and increase our volume...one day.
